According to The National, the booms are caused by the UAE’s Terminal High Altitude Area Defense (THAAD) system—an advanced missile defense setup designed to detect and intercept threats high above the ground. The system engages incoming missiles at altitudes exceeding 100 km, far above populated areas.
The loud booms you hear aren’t on the ground; they are sonic booms created by the interceptors traveling at extremely high speeds. This is why the sound can carry across multiple areas. In short, these booms are a sign that the defense system is working as intended and aren’t a reason for alarm.

As these missile interceptions and jet flights continue, please follow the Ministry of Interior’s safety guidelines:
This situation is temporary, and free mental health support is available if you need it. Staying informed and calm is the best way to ensure your safety.
