President of the United States, Donald Trump, is set to meet with officials from Saudi Arabia, UAE and Qatar in a bid to resolve issues between the neighbouring Gulf countries.
In June 2017 the UAE, Saudi Arabia, Bahrain and Egypt cut all ties with Qatar following accusations of terrorism support.
All travel and trade was ceased and the Gulf countries made a list of demands for Qatar to comply with in order to end the Gulf fallout.
However these 13 demands were not met and the dispute continues nearly nine months later.
According to reports, U.S President Donald Trump will meet with Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman, Abu Dhabi Crown Prince Sheikh Mohammed bin Zayed al-Nahyan of the United Arab Emirates and Qatar’s Emir Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad al-Thani.
The meetings are to take place in March and April and will look at efforts to resolve the dispute as well as the setting up of a Gulf Cooperation Council Summit.
The summit, which officials hope to hold this summer, will discuss a number of issues facing the MENA region such as peace in the region, Iran and the Qatari crisis.
Officials hope that the Qatari crisis can be resolved before the summit so as to focus on other important issues.
“The nation of Qatar unfortunately has historically been a funder of terrorism at a very high level,” Trump said in a joint press conference with Romanian President Klaus Iohannis at the White House.
“We have to stop the funding of terrorism. I decided, along with secretary of state Rex Tillerson, our great generals and military people, the time had come to call on Qatar to end its funding, they have to end that funding and its extremist ideology,” Trump said.
Following the initial fallout in the Gulf region Trump contacted HH Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nayhan, Deputy Supreme Commander of the UAE Armed Forces and Crown Prince of Abu Dhabi, to discuss the security and changing landscape of the region and how the two nations could work together in resolving the events.
