Jordanian UNICEF official Lana Shukri Kataw has returned home safely after being released from detention by Houthi rebels in Yemen’s capital, Sanaa.
Kataw, who serves as deputy director of UNICEF in Yemen, was among at least 19 United Nations staff members who were detained on August 31 when Houthi forces raided UN offices in the city.

According to Jordan’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs, efforts to secure her release began immediately. Kataw arrived in Jordan through Marka Airport, where she was welcomed by her family and senior officials from the ministry.
Her release came just one day after Israeli airstrikes on Yemen killed at least 35 people and injured more than 130, further escalating tensions in the region.
This isn’t the first time Houthi forces have detained UN staff. In recent years, several employees have been held in crackdowns targeting international organizations operating in rebel-held areas.
The Ministry of Foreign Affairs confirmed that Jordan worked closely with international partners and official channels to ensure Kataw’s safe return, adding that her release was the result of coordinated efforts.
News of her return was met with relief and pride online, with Jordanians expressing joy that she had made it safely back to the country.
Lana’s return was more than just a homecoming—it was a symbol of hope and resilience. Her experience reminded everyone of the importance of standing together in tough times. As she settles back into life in Jordan, Lana’s story continues to inspire, reminding us all that even in the face of uncertainty, hope can lead the way home.
