In a speech that resonated across the international community, King Abdullah II of Jordan delivered a stark warning at the United Nations General Assembly, urging the world to address the deepening humanitarian crisis in Gaza and the erosion of trust in international institutions like the UN. His words painted a grave picture of the current global landscape, where geopolitical instability and human suffering have reached unprecedented levels.

The Jordanian monarch highlighted that over the past quarter-century, despite ongoing regional conflicts, no time has felt as perilous as the present. He called attention to the “literal and figurative” attacks on the UN, pointing out the failure of the institution to protect civilians in Gaza. “UN aid trucks sit motionless just miles away from starving Palestinians,” he lamented, underscoring the inaction and the breakdown of global humanitarian efforts.
King Abdullah condemned the actions of the Israeli government, stating that the war’s devastating impact on civilians, including children and aid workers, could not be justified as collateral damage. He highlighted shocking statistics: over 42,000 Palestinians killed since October 7, and a surge in armed settler violence in the West Bank.
He demanded the international community take immediate steps to protect Palestinian lives and uphold international law. Drawing attention to the Arab Peace Initiative, he reminded the world of the Arab world’s longstanding offer for peace, which he believes has been repeatedly rejected by consecutive Israeli governments.
