Jordan saw a sharp shift in weather conditions on Tuesday, January 13, as a strong winter storm moved across the Kingdom, bringing heavy rain, hail, strong winds, and snow flurries in several areas.
Temperatures dropped noticeably across much of the country, with daytime readings hovering around 6 to 8 degrees Celsius in central areas including Amman, while northern and high-altitude regions felt even colder conditions. The combination of cold air and unstable weather led to intense rainfall, hailstorms, and occasional snow flurries, especially in elevated areas.
Snow flurries were reported in parts of Tafilah, particularly in higher elevations, marking a wintry turn for southern Jordan. In northern Jordan, Ajloun experienced dense hail, with ice pellets accumulating on roads and open spaces, making driving conditions hazardous in some areas.
Irbid saw heavy and continuous rainfall, with some areas recording among the highest rain totals so far during the storm. Wet and slippery conditions were also reported across parts of the capital, including neighborhoods such as Tabarbour, as rain spread across Amman throughout the day.
As conditions intensified, the Public Security Directorate issued urgent safety warnings, urging residents to remain cautious due to water accumulation, the risk of flash flooding in low-lying areas, and reduced visibility on roads.
Authorities advised residents to avoid flooded streets, limit unnecessary travel, and closely follow official safety instructions as the storm continues to affect the country. Weather experts noted that January is typically Jordan’s coldest month, but today’s storm stood out for its intensity and widespread impact.
Jordanian social media quickly filled with videos and photos showing hail-covered streets, heavy downpours, and snow flurries, as residents across the country shared real-time glimpses of a dramatic winter day.
