You Can Now Enter the Khazna in Petra… But It’ll Cost You 1000 JD

Yup, you read that right—1000 JD to step inside the Khazna (aka The Treasury) in Petra.

For years, visitors from around the world (and most Jordanians on a school trip at some point) have admired the stunning façade from the outside. But now, for the first time in decades, the inner chambers are officially open to the public… for a price that feels more luxury staycation than local day trip.

The Petra Development and Tourism Region Authority announced that visitors can now access the inside of the iconic site for 10 minutes, with a strictly limited number of entries per day. The idea? Offer an exclusive experience while helping raise funds for conservation and tourism development.

According to the authority, this initiative is meant to promote Petra as a luxury heritage destination—think more “timeless wonder” and less “crowded selfie spot.” The revenue will go toward preserving the site, which honestly makes sense considering how delicate those sandstone carvings are.

But still—1000 JD? That’s a whole month’s rent for some. Naturally, it’s sparked a mix of curiosity, pride, and sticker shock.

Will people pay it? Probably. For some, it’s a once-in-a-lifetime moment inside one of the most legendary places in the world. For others? It’s the memory of that one time they entered it for free in 5th grade with their science teacher yelling “yalla!” in the background.

Luxury tourism is clearly on the rise in Jordan—but whether you’re planning to fork out the full 1000 or just admire the Khazna from the outside (still stunning, still free), one thing’s for sure: Petra will always have us in our feels.
