The Municipality of Baghdad has officially commenced the third phase of its project to restore and develop the historic heart of the city. This phase stretches from Al-Midan Square to Al-Rusafi Square and aligns with Baghdad’s upcoming designation as the 2025 Arab Capital of Tourism.

According to Adi Al-Jundeel, the spokesperson for the Baghdad Municipality, this new phase builds upon previous efforts to rejuvenate the city’s historic landmarks. Earlier phases included the restoration of Al-Mutanabbi Street and the Al-Saray Alley. The ongoing work focuses on revitalizing Baghdad’s cultural heritage while preserving its historic identity.

Al-Jundeel emphasized that the project seeks to showcase Baghdad’s rich history and architectural legacy, introducing new generations to iconic locations such as Al-Rasheed Street, Al-Mutanabbi Street, and the Qushla building.

The initiative is part of a broader plan to prepare the city for its role as the Arab Capital of Tourism in 2025. A series of cultural and literary events will take place, attracting local, Arab, and international audiences. This milestone highlights Baghdad’s growing reputation as a hub for cultural and historical tourism in the region.

Iraqi Prime Minister Mohammed Shia Al-Sudani expressed his full support for the ongoing restoration efforts, stressing the importance of executing these projects in a way that honors Baghdad’s historical significance. He also emphasized the need to provide essential services for tourists, as Iraq witnesses increasing interest from global travelers following this recognition.

The third phase of the project will include restoring historic building facades, upgrading infrastructure, and preserving archaeological landmarks. The goal is to present a vibrant image of Baghdad that reflects its historical and cultural significance.

These efforts are expected to elevate Baghdad’s position on the regional and global tourism map, showcasing its rich cultural heritage and attracting more visitors. By revitalizing its historic center, Baghdad aims to project a positive image of Iraq to the world and establish itself as a key destination for cultural tourism.

The city’s ambitious plans are set to breathe new life into its historic streets, ensuring that its cultural and historical treasures are preserved for generations to come.
