Special Forces Major General Yahya Rasool Abdullah, spokesperson for the Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces, Mohammed Shia Al-Sudani, stated on Tuesday that the latter directed Interior Minister Abdul Amir Al-Shammari to conduct an “immediate” investigation to determine the causes of the security breach involving the launch of several “Katyusha” rockets from the Ameriya area last night towards Baghdad International Airport.

In a statement today, Major General Abdullah said that Al-Sudani instructed the announcement of the investigation’s results and the identification of those responsible within 48 hours.

In response, the Iraqi Ministry of Interior announced that a security official had been detained following the rocket attack targeting the Victoria Military Base at Baghdad International Airport.

In a statement today, the ministry said, “While the Ministry of Interior strives to enhance security and stability in all regions of the country, lawless elements are attempting to disrupt the peace. The most recent incident was the breach that occurred at 00:20 on the first of October 2024 at Baghdad International Airport.”

The statement noted that two Katyusha rockets landed: one in the parking lot of the second battalion of the Counter-Terrorism Service and the other in an abandoned area inside the airport.

The ministry also indicated that it has initiated an investigation into the security force responsible for the Ameriya area of Baghdad, where the breach originated, and has detained the commander of the force to determine the reasons for this negligence in protecting citizens’ lives and public and private property.

The Ministry of Interior emphasized that it would “vigorously hold accountable anyone who attempts to harm the security and stability of the nation.”

Earlier on Tuesday morning, Victoria Base at Baghdad International Airport was hit by three rockets, with the first falling near the base, the second near the second battalion of the Counter-Terrorism Service, and the third near a runway at the civilian airport.

The source also mentioned that the rockets were launched from a platform in the Ameriya area, west of Baghdad, and the base’s missile defense system was activated to counter the attack.

The source added that the platform was located in an abandoned area in Ameriya, and security forces were able to dismantle and neutralize it.
