Iraqi Football Association Terminates Coach Jesús Casas’ Contract;

In a decisive move, the Iraqi Football Association (IFA) has terminated the contract of national team coach Jesús Casas. This decision comes in the wake of a series of unsatisfactory performances, including a recent 2-1 defeat to Palestine in the 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifiers.

According to IFA member Ahmed Al-Mousawi, the association convened and resolved to end Casas’ contract under Article 8 of the agreement between the two parties. A committee has been formed to handle the financial and legal aspects of this termination, led by IFA President Adnan Dirjal, with members including Younis Mahmoud, Mohammed Nasser, Rasha Talib, and Jamal Al-Asadi.

The IFA has scheduled a meeting on April 5 to discuss the selection of a new head coach. Al-Mousawi indicated that the association has shortlisted five candidates, both local and international, to fill the position.

In an unexpected development, former national team player Justin Meram has expressed his willingness to assume the coaching role. Meram, who has had a distinguished playing career, believes he can contribute positively to the team’s future. However, his lack of formal coaching experience may be a consideration for the IFA as they deliberate on the appointment.

As the IFA moves forward in selecting a new coach, the Iraqi football community remains hopeful that the next leader will revitalize the national team and steer them toward success in upcoming competitions.
