Baghdad took the spotlight this week as it hosted the 34th Arab League Summit, bringing together leaders from across the region for critical talks. The summit wrapped with the release of the “Baghdad Declaration,” a unified statement calling for an immediate ceasefire in Gaza and stronger international efforts toward a two-state solution.
The declaration called for humanitarian aid to reach Palestinians without delay and voiced full support for UNRWA. It also included a proposal to deploy UN peacekeepers in Palestinian territories until an independent Palestinian state is established, with East Jerusalem as its capital.
Syria was also a major focus. Leaders reaffirmed support for Syria’s unity, condemned Israeli strikes on Syrian land, and welcomed the easing of U.S. sanctions. The summit recognized Saudi Arabia’s role in aiding Syria’s reintegration and supporting the safe return of refugees.
By hosting this year’s summit, Baghdad reaffirmed its role as a regional diplomatic hub at a time when Arab consensus is more important than ever.
