New Railway Project to Relieve Baghdad’s Traffic Congestion
In a strategic move aimed at improving the transportation infrastructure and reducing traffic congestion in the capital, the Ministry of Transport has announced plans to construct a new railway line around Baghdad. This new project will replace all existing railway tracks within the city and provide a bypass route, significantly enhancing the efficiency of rail transport while alleviating traffic bottlenecks in urban areas.
According to Mitham Al-Safi, Director of the Ministry’s Media Office, the project is set to begin in the upcoming year, and it will be executed under a consultancy contract with an Italian company specializing in railway systems. The new railway line will extend from the Al-Yousifiya area, located south of Baghdad near the International Airport, to the northern region of Taji.
Enhancing Connectivity and Reducing Traffic Congestion
The new ring railway will provide a vital link for freight and passenger services, improving connectivity between key industrial areas and reducing the need for trains to pass through the heart of Baghdad. This will not only streamline rail operations but also remove the old railway tracks that currently run through the city, opening up space for urban development and reducing disruptions to daily life.
