A recent incident in East Hidd has once again highlighted the pressing need for improved road safety measures in Bahrain.​

On March 16, 2025, 14-year-old Muhammed Saud, a ninth-grade student at the Indian School Bahrain, tragically lost his life after being struck by a vehicle while cycling home from mosque prayers in East Hidd. ​

The entire community has been deeply affected

The community has been deeply affected by this loss, with an outpouring of thoughts and prayers for Muhammed’s family. This incident has reignited discussions about the safety of cyclists and pedestrians, especially in residential areas.​

It’s time to protect all road users

In the wake of this tragedy, there have been renewed calls for dedicated cycling lanes and enhanced pedestrian infrastructure to protect vulnerable road users. Advocates emphasize the importance of motorists staying vigilant and adhering to speed limits, particularly in neighbourhoods and areas with high foot traffic, and for cyclists to use designated cycling lanes where available whilst wearing appropriate safety gear.

Non-licensed bicycles have been banned recently

It’s worth noting that the General Directorate of Traffic has recently enforced regulations banning non-licensed bicycles from main public roads to enhance safety. Violations of this rule can lead to confiscation of the bicycles and legal action. ​

While regulations are essential, a collective effort from both motorists and cyclists is crucial to prevent such tragedies. By staying alert and respecting road safety rules, everyone can work together towards a safer environment for all road users!
