Bahrain Mourns The Passing Of Haji’s Café Founder Haji Ghulam Hussain Khalil

The heart of the Manama Souq feels a little quieter today as the Kingdom is in mourning following the passing of Haji Ghulam Hussain Khalil, the legendary founder and visionary behind the iconic Haji’s Café.

A true pillar of the community, Haji Ghulam was the man who turned a modest alleyway shop into what is arguably the most famous traditional eatery in Bahrain. His passing marks the end of a chapter, but his legacy remains etched in every stone of the old souq.

A legacy that was born in the early 1950’s

Established in 1950, Haji’s Café has stood for over seven decades as a symbol of authentic Bahraini hospitality. While the rest of the city modernized with skyscrapers and malls, Haji’s remained beautifully unchanged.

Tucked away between the historic buildings near Bab Al Bahrain, the café has become a global destination.

More than just a cafe

Haji Ghulam’s philosophy was simple: hospitality first. He was known for his “open-door” spirit, welcoming royalty, world-class chefs, and backpackers all at the same tables.

This humble approach to life and business is what made Haji’s a sanctuary for locals and a must-visit for tourists. Whether you were there for a 5:30 AM breakfast or a late-night grill, Haji’s warmth was the secret ingredient in every dish.

The community is mourning the Father figure

Since the news broke, an outpouring of love has flooded social media. From generations of Bahrainis who grew up eating his balaleet to expats who found their first “home” in his alleyway, the entire community is sharing stories of Haji Ghulam’s kindness.

He leaves behind a rich legacy carried on by his children, Zuhair, Ahmed, Adel, Huda, Mona, and Dunya, who have vowed to keep the spirit of Manama alive through the café.

The beloved restaurant will remain closed for the rest of the week

In honor of his memory and to allow his family and the community to grieve, the iconic Haji’s Café will remain temporarily closed.

Rest in peace, Haji Ghulam Hussain Khalil. Thank you for feeding people’s souls and showing them the true meaning of a Bahraini welcome!
