Illegal Crabbing Is A Thing And People In Bahrain Just Got Detained For It

Hera Shabbir

Illegal crabbing is becoming a big deal in Bahrain, with people actually getting in trouble for it!

Recently, the authorities have cracked down on this illegal activity, especially in areas where crabbing is banned to protect local marine life. It turns out that some people just can’t resist the temptation, and they’ve been caught trying to harvest crabs from protected waters.

Talk about a risky hobby!

Four expats were caught with 364 grams of crabs obtained from fishing in a restricted area

The men have been detained while the Public Prosecution investigates the case. The Coast Guard reported that the arrests happened when officers stopped the men in restricted waters and discovered the illegal catch during a boat search. Prosecutors have questioned the suspects and ordered their detention as the investigation continues.

In addition, two boats and the fishing equipment used have been seized, and the crabs will be sold at auction, with the proceeds going to the court’s treasury. The case will eventually be presented to the relevant court.

One of the more notable cases involved a group of four expats who were arrested back in October 2024

These folks were caught using unauthorized methods to catch shrimp, which violated local fishing regulations. The authorities didn’t waste any time, and the violators now face serious consequences, including possible deportation. It’s clear that Bahrain isn’t messing around when it comes to protecting its natural resources.

So, if you’re planning to visit or live in Bahrain, keep in mind that crabbing and fishing are tightly regulated, and breaking the rules could land you in some hot water—literally!
