Winfred Yavi broke the Olympic record on Tuesday night  as she claimed gold in the women’s 3000m steeplechase. Bahrain’s world champion outpaced reigning Olympic champ Peruth Chemutai, finishing with a time of 8:52.76, just ahead of the Ugandan’s national record of 8:53.34. The 20-year-old Kenyan, Faith Cherotich, took bronze with a personal best of 8:55.15.
