A man in Bahrain learned a costly lesson after a text message to his former wife landed him in legal trouble. He was given a BHD 50 fine after the courts deemed his message insulting.
Let’s dive into how this unfolded.
It all started when the man reached out to his ex-wife through a messaging app. According to her complaint, the message contained language that she felt offended her modesty and dignity. The message didn’t reference any specific event, but she believed it crossed a line, leading her to file a formal complaint with the Public Prosecution, including a copy of the message.
Prosecutors took the matter seriously, charging him on two counts. These included causing a nuisance by misusing communication tools and insulting her with language that harmed her reputation.
Initially, a criminal order was issued against him, resulting in a BD50 fine. The case then made its way through the Lower Criminal Court and eventually reached the Court of Cassation. In the end, the Court of Cassation upheld the conviction, confirming the fine and the loss of his bail money.
