Born in Brazil, far from her Lebanese roots, Arlette Al-Khoury went on to become Lebanon’s first officially graduated soprano. Her voice may not be well-documented today, but her story of talent and kindness is unforgettable.
Arlette moved to Beirut in 1932 with her siblings and joined the conservatory. Her talent stood out fast—winning awards and charming everyone with her voice and warm stage presence.
She didn’t just sing—she broke barriers. Arlette starred in major productions like Les deux rois and Mireille, the first European opera ever performed in Lebanon, earning praise from critics and even the composer’s family.
Even without a big opera house, Arlette made Lebanon her stage. She performed classics like Handel and Beethoven while adding her own twist with Brazilian folk songs—celebrating both her heritage and her new home.
Offstage, Arlette gave back. After her husband recovered from illness, she opened a clinic for children in need. She toured the region and Latin America, using her voice to raise funds and spread hope.
