Google Doodle Celebrates Lebanon’s Independence Day!

Today’s Doodle celebrates Lebanon’s Independence Day! On this day in 1943, Lebanon finally gained its freedom and sovereignty after more than 20 years of foreign occupation.

Lebanon had been under a French mandate since 1920. On November 8th, 1943, members of the Lebanese parliament reworked the constitution to remove mentions of French authority.

Three days later, authorities arrested several leaders, including Bechara El Khoury and Riad El Solh, for this act.

This sparked widespread protests and international criticism of France, with mounting pressure ultimately forcing the French to release the leaders and formally recognize Lebanon’s sovereignty.
