With cheers, roses, and music, Chekka, a small town in northern Lebanon, welcomed its liberated son Suhail al-Hamwi after 33 years of imprisonment in one of the monstrous Syrian prisons in Latakia.
Suhail al Hamwi spent 33 years in prison, during which he, his wife, and his son suffered greatly. He learned 20 years after his arrest that he was charged with “belonging to the Lebanese Forces.” He was arrested in 1992 in front of his house.

Justice Minister Henri Khoury, under pressure from opposition and families of detainees, met with the Committee of Detainees to coordinate efforts on gathering information about Lebanese detainees in Syrian prisons.
The issue of detainees is being closely monitored by Prime Minister Najib Mikati and Minister of Justice Henri Khoury, who are set to hold meetings in the coming days with members of the Missing Persons Committee.
