Environment Minister Nasser Yassine welcomed the government’s decision to approve, at the request of his ministry, a donation of $3.458 million to fight forest fires in sensitive regions of Lebanon.

This donation comes from the Global Environment Facility (GEF), financed through the World Bank.

The minister announced that the GEF grant will help improve fire risk management in Lebanon’s most fire-prone areas.
He added that this effort supports the Ministry of Environment’s strategy for preventing and reducing forest fires and aligns with sustainable forest and nature reserve management.

Yassine noted that the ministry’s efforts have significantly cut the area damaged by fires, with a 91% reduction in 2022 and an 82% reduction in 2023 compared to 2021.
He credited the success to the teamwork of the Civil Defense, army, municipalities, forestry centers, and nature reserve committees.

The minister announced that the GEF grant, funded by the World Bank, will enhance fire risk management in Lebanon’s most vulnerable areas.
