Lebanese Parliament Postpones Municipal Elections Amid Security Concerns

The Lebanese parliament postponed municipal elections scheduled for May 12 and extended the mandates of existing councils by a year until May 31, 2025.

The decision faced opposition from various political parties but was made due to security concerns.

Lebanon’s last municipal elections in Lebanon took place in May 2016, with elected councils and local officials serving six-year terms. The Lebanese parliament extended their terms twice, in March 2022 due to parliamentary elections overlap and in 2023 due to financial constraints.
