Lebanon Is On The Verge Of Another Electricity Blackout!

Diana E.

Electricite du Liban (EDL) is nearing a fuel shortage and facing a potential blackout amid employee strikes over denied performance bonuses, with the Energy and Water Ministry seeking a resolution.

The public supplier reported that no cargo has been delivered under the Iraq-Lebanon swap agreement for July or August so far.

On July 27, it was announced that a production unit at the Zahrani plant was shut down due to a delayed fuel shipment. The Deir Ammar site was also shut down on August 7.

Notably, these were the largest and only power plants in the country receiving regular fuel from EDL, while the Jiyeh and Zouk plants have been offline for some time.

EDL said it may be able to continue operating the remaining production units at the Zahrani plant to continue supplying the country’s infrastructure, but it will not last beyond August 17.

The Energy and Water Ministry will announce a resolution “within 10 days to two weeks”.
