Nawaf Salam Named Lebanon’s Next Prime Minister

Nawaf Salam, the head of the ICJ, has become Lebanon’s prime minister after President Joseph Aoun appointed him with the backing of more than half of the lawmakers in parliament.

Salam had secured the backing of 84 of the MPs out of 128 by this afternoon, with nine endorsing Najib Mikati, who has served as prime minister in a caretaker capacity.

Who is Judge Nawaf Salam?

  • Salam was born on 15 December 1953 in Beirut to a well-known political family.
  • Salam’s academic career began with a degree in Social Sciences from the School of Graduate Studies in Paris in 1974, followed by a doctorate in history from the Sorbonne University in Paris in 1979.
  • He later studied law at Beirut University in 1984, with him obtaining his Masters of Law from Harvard Law School in 1991.
  • After a distinguished teaching career at Harvard, Columbia, and Yale, Salam entered Lebanese politics in 1999 as a member of the Economic and Social Council’s Executive Office, serving until 2002.
  • He later served as Lebanon’s Ambassador to the UN and its representative on the Security Council from 2007 to 2017.
  • Salam was also the Representative of Lebanon to the UN Economic and Social Council in 2016 and 2018.
