Controversy erupted at Beirut Airport over reports of “funds” linked to Hezbollah on an Iranian plane. An Iranian diplomat refused a suitcase inspection, citing diplomatic immunity.
Passengers arriving from Tehran also protested the security checks, with a man angrily shouting that Beirut’s airport had “become Tel Aviv Airport.”
In response, motorcyclists staged protests on the airport road to denounce the inspection of the Iranian plane.
After remaining at the airport for hours, the Lebanese Ministry of Foreign Affairs received a memorandum from the Iranian Embassy in Lebanon regarding the suitcase’s contents.
The memorandum stated that it contained documents and cash intended for embassy use, leading to its entry being permitted under the 1961 Vienna Convention on Diplomatic Relations.
