Avatar

The head of Egypt’s Central Agency for Public Mobilization and Statistics, Khairy Barakat, reported that the proportion of females who had been subjected to the illegal practice of female genital mutilation (FGM) had dropped from 21% to 14% for females between the ages of 1 and 19.

There is a decrease in the rate of FGM among previously married women, reaching about 86% compared to 92% in 2014

The data suggest that the rate of circumcision in Upper Egypt is significantly higher, at around 92% and 93.4% in rural Upper Egypt governorates compared to Lower Egypt governorates. It is more than 10 percentage points higher in rural areas than in urban areas, 86.6% compared to 76.7%, respectively.

Most impressively, there is a decline in the rate of projected circumcision, from 56% in 2014 to 27% in 2021, an outstanding achievements for the efforts made in this area.
