“Don’t Make Friends at Work”….A Creator Sparks a Debate That Split the Internet

A content creator recently set social media on fire after reigniting the debate over whether work friends are ever truly real. According to her, workplace friendships aren’t genuine; they’re transactional, built on convenience rather than care. Her video quickly went viral, with people flooding the comment section to share their experiences and opinions… and the internet was instantly divided.

The Argument

According to her, friendships formed at work are often transactional rather than genuine. She claims that colleagues:

  • Don’t truly want what’s best for you
  • Keep you around for convenience or personal benefit
  • Won’t be genuinely happy about your achievements or promotions, even if they act like it
  • Only stick around because of shared work space

She added that coworkers aren’t there out of true care or love — they’re there because they need something from you.

And the comments section?

Her bold statement immediately divided opinions online.
Against Work friendships

Some people agreed with her take, sharing stories of competitive coworkers or experiences where colleagues celebrated little but envied much. One user wrote, “I’ve seen it happen so many times — people only stick around because it benefits them.”

Pro-work frienships

Others, however, strongly disagreed, calling her argument too general. Many shared heartfelt experiences of close friendships formed at work. One commenter even posted a photo with their work bestie, writing, “We survived crazy projects together, these are some of the best friends I’ve ever had.”

Interestingly, many others flipped the argument entirely, saying it was actually their university friends who turned out to be the transactional ones. In the end, this shows that such arguments can’t be generalized. It all depends on the individuals involved and the dynamics of each relationship.
