Egyptians woke up to higher fuel prices after the government implemented a midnight increase of EGP 3 per liter across several petroleum products on Tuesday.
The Ministry of Petroleum announced that the new prices took effect at 3:00 a.m., raising gasoline and diesel costs nationwide.
Here are the updated fuel prices in Egypt:
Gasoline 95: EGP 24 per liter (up from EGP 21)
Gasoline 92: EGP 22.25 per liter (up from EGP 19.25)
Gasoline 80: EGP 20.75 per liter (up from EGP 17.75)
Diesel: EGP 20.5 per liter (up from EGP 17.5)
Other energy products also saw increases. Compressed natural gas (CNG) used for vehicles rose from EGP 10 to EGP 13 per cubic meter. Meanwhile, liquefied petroleum gas cylinders went up as well, with the 12.5 kg cylinder increasing from EGP 225 to EGP 275, and the 25 kg cylinder rising from EGP 450 to EGP 550.
Following the fuel hike, Cairo Governorate announced adjustments to public transport fares for both the Public Transport Authority buses and private collective transport companies.
The updated fares are as follows:
Public Transport Authority buses:
Regular bus: EGP 13 instead of EGP 12 (across 186 routes)
Air-conditioned bus: EGP 25 instead of EGP 23 (across 11 routes)
Collective transport minibuses:
Regular minibus: EGP 19 instead of EGP 18
Air-conditioned minibus: EGP 25 instead of EGP 22
Cairo Governor Dr. Ibrahim Saber said the new fares were set based on the distance of each route and the number of trips, aiming to ensure fairness for both passengers and drivers.
Authorities also coordinated with neighboring governorates connected through shared transport routes to standardize fares and prevent passengers from being overcharged
The governorate confirmed that banners and stickers displaying the updated fares will be placed clearly at transportation hubs and stops so commuters can easily see the official prices.
Local authorities, including transport departments and traffic police, have been instructed to intensify inspection campaigns to ensure drivers comply with the new fares and route regulations. Legal action will be taken against any violations.
According to the Ministry of Petroleum, the hike comes amid “exceptional circumstances” in global energy markets, driven by ongoing geopolitical tensions in the Middle East that have raised import costs, shipping, insurance, and global oil prices.
While the government did not say whether prices will drop again, it said it is boosting domestic oil and gas production, accelerating exploration, and encouraging investment to reduce imports, while continuing to monitor the market to ensure fuel availability and energy stability.
