When asked whether he missed Egypt, Bassem was quick to share his heartfelt response. Yes, he missed it, but there was also a sense of uncertainty.
After more than a decade away, the country and the people have gone through many changes.
Coming back after such a long absence, he feared that he might feel like an outsider in his own home. The familiar streets and faces may not feel quite as familiar as they once did, and this fear of alienation is something many of us can relate to when revisiting a place after a long time away.
One question that’s been lingering for many fans is why Bassem didn’t continue his successful show Al-Bernameg in the United States after his departure from Egypt.
His answer was straightforward: the success of Al-Bernameg was tied to the unique circumstances Egypt was facing at the time.
The political and social atmosphere in Egypt provided the perfect backdrop for the show, allowing Bassem to strike a chord with viewers. But as he pointed out, the situation in the U.S. didn’t offer the same resonance.
Bassem delved into the experience of being in the U.S. during a politically charged period.
Referring to the events of October 7, Bassem reflected on the vast difference in the propaganda and media narrative he encountered in the U.S. compared to other parts of the world.
“They live in a machine that is bigger than America and its politicians,” he said. For Bassem, the reality of the U.S. political machine felt far more complex and disconnected from the everyday experiences of people.
It wasn’t just about the news—it was about the way stories were being spun to serve larger agendas, and that’s something he couldn’t ignore.
Bassem’s relationship with British journalist Piers Morgan is well-known. Their history dates back, and the two have had several encounters, both on and off-screen.
During the latest interview with Morgan, Bassem faced a critical decision: whether or not to proceed with the interview at all. He rejected it many times before finally agreeing to go through with it because he wasn’t sure what to say.
After years away, Bassem Youssef’s return to Egyptian TV has made waves. It’s clear from the reception that people missed him and his unique brand of humor, whether political satire or just humor.
