Egyptians awoke to the gruesome murder of a child bride from Kafr Al Zayat, Gharbeya. Faten- who was only 15 when she met her death, was forced into marriage by her parents at only 13 years old.
In an interview, Faten’s mother disclosed that her son-in-law had been begging and harassing them to marry Faten since he first laid his eyes on her. The family didn’t agree in the beginning but they thought he would stop bothering them if they agreed.
However, the abuse and harassment didn’t stop after he finally got his wish granted, he started abusing 13-year-old Faten days after they got married. Sources revealed that the perpetrator’s family has been physically abusing Faten, harassing her, and mistreating her.

Faten met her fate at 15 after she ate a plate of Koshari. The almost teenager had been starving for days when she finally ate something to cure her hunger. However, her husband became furious when he found out his wife ate without his “permission”.
According to news agencies, the husband started beating Faten for eating before she ran to the roof to seek refuge; however, her 23-year-old husband caught up with her and threw her over their house from the 4th floor.
Initial investigation found burn marks and traces of abuse on Faten’s body.
The bereaved mother cited, “My daughter was a victim. She was hungry and ate a plate of Koshari while they were outside before lunchtime. When he came back, he beat her and burnt her body with an iron. She called for help so I would go take her from the back door of the house, but I refused because he would hit me too.”
Faten’s body was transferred to the morgue of Kafr El-Zayat General Hospital, and the Criminal Investigation Department was tasked with investigating the circumstances of the incident, preparing a report on the incident, and notifying the Public Prosecution for investigation.
The 2008 amendment concludes that child marriage is illegal in Egypt; however, some families conduct religious ceremonies and wait until the girl is 18 to register the marriage certificate legally.
If you happen to know of any case of child marriage, do not hesitate to reach out to authorities.
