Egypt is celebrating 110 since the finding of the famous Nefertiti Bust in Minya in southern Egypt.
The statue was found on the hands of German archaeologists who came to Egypt on an excavation trip in 1912.When the statue was found, a German archaeologist, Ludwig Borchardt, covered it in clay in order to hide its true value and smuggle it out of Egypt.
After the statue was smuggled out of Egypt, it arrived to Germany and remained hidden until 1967 where it was first unearthed in The Egyptian Museum in the Charlottenburg borough of Berlin where it remained until 2005. From 2005 to 2009, the statue was moved to Atlas museum. From 2009, the statue remained the centerpiece of Neues Museum until our modern day.
Recently, Egyptian Archaeologists have been petitioning for the return of pieces of historical value such as the Rosetta Stone and Zodiac of Dendera to their original and rightful home, Egypt before the opening of the Grand Egyptian Museum. Lately, the Nefertiti Bust was added to the list of pieces that should be returned to Egypt.
The Egyptian Government has been in talks with the German Government in order to return the Statue but no avail, as German officials claim that it’s an important piece to the German society as it draws in a large number of tourists annually.
