First Picture of Egypt’s Longest Papyrus Revealed!

Egypt’s longest papyrus was uncovered by a team of archaeologists led by Dr. Mostafa Waziri in the Saqqara Necropolis. The papyrus is the longest ever discovered in Egypt and the first to be discovered on Egyptian hands in more than 100 years!

It extends to almost 16 meters and contains 113 chapters from the Book of the Dead.

Mostafa Waziri, Head of the Supreme Council of Antiquities stated during the Archaeologists’ Day Celebration at Cairo Opera House that “It is the first and longest papyrus written in Hieratic to be discovered in Saqqara necropolis”.

Waziri explains that it was found wrapped in linen in the coffin of Ahmose. The papyrus dates back to the Ptolemaic period which took place from 305 to 30 BC. It also contains 113 chapters from the Book of the Dead distributed over 150 columns written in black and red ink.

The Book of the Dead is a book that contains religious spells, rituals, and funerary texts that were used as a guide to ancient Egyptians on their journey into the other world, and it includes religious chants.
