Egypt Wraps up Talks on Grand Ethiopian Renaissance Dam And Asserts Right to Resource Protection

The Ministry of Water Resources and Irrigation announced the end of negotiations with the Ethiopian delegation regarding the Grand Ethiopian Renaissance Dam.

In the statement, the ministry explained that the negotiations were unsuccessful due to Ethiopia’s refusal to accept any of the technical or legal compromise solutions that would safeguard the interests of all three countries, including Ethiopia’s pronounced interests, as well as Ethiopia’s consistent backtracking on the understandings that were reached.

Additionally, Ethiopia appears to be using the negotiation process as a way to legitimize its existing control of the Blue Nile while seeking approval from downstream countries without considering its international legal obligations. This suggests that Ethiopia is not genuinely engaging in fair negotiations.

Considering Ethiopia’s stance on these issues, the negotiation processes have reached an impasse. Egypt asserts its commitment to closely oversee the filling and operation of the GERD and maintains its right, by international agreements, to protect its water resources and national security if any harm occurs.
