Egyptian Law Fines From Up To LE 5M For Fake Weather News

Raghda Salah Embaby

Egypt has passed a law reorganizing the General Meteorological Authority. It states that sharing incorrect weather information on social media or other platforms will result in fines ranging from L.E. 50,000 to L.E. 5 million. The law defines the authority’s role in providing accurate short and long-term weather forecasts and marine weather warnings across Egypt. The aim is to ensure reliable information reaches the public and prevent confusion or panic. This strengthens the authority’s position and promotes responsible communication. Accurate weather forecasts are crucial for sectors like agriculture, transportation, and public safety. The law aims to maintain the integrity of weather-related information in Egypt.

The authority comprises stations, devices, and tools for monitoring and analyzing various meteorological elements. This includes surface and aerial data, agricultural weather, air pollution, solar radiation, and the ozone gas levels in the air. These measures are essential for maintaining the safety of air, sea, and land navigation, as well as safeguarding lives and public and private property.

The law aims to safeguard the state’s resources and minimize losses resulting from false news or inaccurate meteorological data. This has a detrimental impact on the economy and institutional structure. It strives to create a legislative environment that enhances meteorological services, improves quality, and encourages scientific research while ensuring self-financing. Moreover, the law establishes frameworks for managing meteorological services and attracting foreign investments. In essence, it aims to protect the state, promote accurate information, and foster the development of the meteorological sector.
