Egyptian-Palestinian actress Mai El-Kalamawy’s Scenes were Removed from Gladiator II Following Criticism of Israeli Crimes in Palestine

Viewers of Gladiator II were surprised to find that all scenes featuring Egyptian-Palestinian actress Mai El-Kalamawy had been completely removed from the film, despite her significant presence in the initial promotional material. Early trailers and promotional events suggested that El-Kalamawy would play a major role in the movie, raising questions about the sudden changes.

According to various press reports, the decision to delete El-Kalamawy’s scenes may be linked to her outspoken criticism of crimes committed by the occupying state in Palestine. This speculation has sparked widespread debate, as her removal has shifted attention to the casting decisions behind the movie.

Directed by Ridley Scott, Gladiator II features an ensemble cast including Denzel Washington, Pedro Pascal, and Paul Mescal. However, recent reports have revealed that Israeli actress Yuval Gonen has taken over El-Kalamawy’s role. Gonen reportedly re-shot all of El-Kalamawy’s scenes, appearing in her place despite the latter’s prominent inclusion in the early promotional screenings of the film.

The controversy surrounding these changes has left fans and critics alike questioning the motivations behind the decision, fueling discussions on the intersection of art, politics, and representation in the entertainment industry.
