Egyptian Sumo Athlete Wins Gold in World Games 2022

Avatar

History was made when Egyptian sumo athlete Abdelrahman Elsefy won gold, and then lost, and then won gold again.

Elsefy eventually went home with the prize at the gold-medal sumo match of the men’s lightweight division of the 2022 World Games in Birmingham, Alabama.

Elsefy was disqualified for celebrating his win against Ukraine’s Demid Karachenko with a backflip.

While the crowd cheered for the backflip, the ref and the judges and the ringside announcer, all claimed it was a breach of sportsmanship.

They explained over the speakers that sumo was about honor (and not backflips) because this was the way it happens in Japan. Ok negative Nelly.

Elsefy’s coach demanded a rematch, and Elsefy won again!

This time though, he didn’t do a backflip.
