Egypt’s Back-to-School Costs Surge Before New Academic Year

Raghda Salah Embaby

As the 2023-2024 academic year in Egypt approaches, parents and students are feeling the pinch as the prices of essential school supplies, such as books, experience a significant surge compared to the previous year. This sudden increase in the cost of education essentials has left many families grappling with financial concerns just before the school gates swing open.

According to reports from Al-Masry Al-Youm, various stationary stores in downtown Cairo have witnessed prices skyrocketing by an average of 30 to 50 percent in the run-up to the new school year. However The head of the Office Supplies Division at the Cairo Chamber of Commerce, disputed these claims, stating that the price hike did not exceed 10 percent compared to the previous academic year in 2022.

The Ministry of Supply and Internal Trade established “Ahlan Madares” exhibition, set to launch in Cairo on September 15. The Ministry has collaborated with the Office Supplies Division at the Federation of the Egyptian Chambers of Commerce to provide school supplies at reduced prices during this exhibition.
