On June 12th, President Abd El Fattah El Sisi ordered the creation of a new cemetery in for iconic and historical Egyptian figures whose current graves must be moved due to urgent development needs.
El Sisi announced that the new location housing these historical figures will be named “Garden of the Immortals” to commemorate and honor their strong historical presence.
The president also ordered the creation of a museum at the new location to safeguard the artwork and artifacts from these respected individuals’ existing graves.
In the past few months, the government has ordered the relocation of a large number of tombs, many of which belonged to important historical figures, all in the interest of national development.
This decision was met was a lot of disapproval from the Egyptian community as they thought that moving these tombs is considered a violation of history, and asked for a restoration of these centuries-old cemeteries.
Today, during a press conference, Mostafa Madbouly explained that the space currently occupied by old tombs will be made into gardens and parks.
He also stressed the necessity to move these cemeteries that have become unsuitable for their purpose to other places and to start developing this area in a way that serves to add “green lungs”.
