Egypt’s Prime Minister Mostafa Madbouly issued a decree on Saturday mandating that foreigners seeking tourist and non-tourist residency provide evidence of payment, in dollars or equivalent foreign currencies, for residency fees.
The requirement includes presenting a receipt confirming the transfer of funds through an authorized bank or exchange company.
Additionally, the decree obligates foreigners residing illegally in the country to regularize their status by securing an Egyptian sponsor and depositing administrative expenses equivalent to $1000 in a specified account within Egyptian banks, according to an official statement from the Egyptian cabinet.
The decision aims to facilitate the process for a new segment of foreigners targeted by the decree.
According to an International Organisation for Migration study, there are over 9.1 million foreign residents in Egypt, originating from 133 different countries.
Since the start of the Sudanese civil war in April 2023, when over 200,000 individuals fled to Egypt, that figure has climbed.
