Giza Zoo Returns to Its Glory

Starting 2024, the Giza Zoo will turn into an open range zoo in order to help restore its historical popularity and glory.

The company in charge of the Zoo’s renovations, Military Production Co. for Projects, Engineering Consultancy and General Supplies stated earlier that the zoo will become an open range park equipped with all safety measures in order to give visitors a sense of wilderness.

The Zoo is considered to be the oldest one in Africa and the third oldest in the world.

Being built by Khedive Ismail in 1891, the zoo was considered the Harem garden for a while.

He imported exotic plants from different countries like Africa, South America and India. The zoo is built on 80 acres of land is considered to be one Egypt’s largest parks, and is home to many endangered animal species.

The zoo is currently being renovated by the government after its long journey with neglect which led it to be kicked out of the World Association of Zoos and Aquariums in 2004.

The renovation will last a period of 18 months, after which, the zoo will reopen as a secured open space which will allow visitors to experience wilderness.

The zoo will close its doors for a year for renovation starting from January 2023.
