A Cautionary Tale by Hend Abdelhalim

Dealing with weight loss can be a challenge in itself, but sometimes, the treatments prescribed to manage it can come with unexpected twists and turns. Hend Abdelhalim recently shared her story—a journey that has taught her (and now us!) a lot about approaching new treatments with caution and an open line of communication with our healthcare providers. Here’s a look at her experience with antidiabetic injections, how they impacted her, and her advice for others considering this treatment.

A Short Trial, Big Consequences

Hend Abdelhalim was no stranger to managing her health, but her recent experience took her by surprise. After just one month and ten days on antidiabetic injections, she found herself facing a serious complication that she had not anticipated. The injections, initially intended to help control her desire to eat, triggered a condition called gastroparesis, a disorder that slows down or even temporarily halts the stomach’s ability to process food normally.

This wasn’t a minor inconvenience. With her stomach essentially paralyzed, her ability to eat and drink became significantly impaired. As a result, Hend’s primary source of nutrition became saline solutions—a stark reminder of how powerful, and potentially unpredictable, these medications can be.

Understanding Gastroparesis: When the Stomach Slows Down

Gastroparesis isn’t a term that most of us hear often, but it’s a serious condition with major effects on daily life. When Hend’s stomach stopped functioning normally, her entire digestive process was affected. Eating and drinking became difficult, and her body couldn’t break down food or absorb nutrients like it normally would.

People with gastroparesis often feel full after just a few bites, experience nausea, and may even vomit because their stomach is unable to process food in the usual way.

A Word of Caution From Hend: Always Consult Your Doctor

One of the biggest takeaways from Hend’s experience is the importance of consulting with your doctor before starting any new medication.  Hend wants others to know that while these injections can be beneficial, they may also come with unexpected risks. “Always approach these injections with caution and consult your doctor beforehand,” she advises. Medications interact differently with each person’s body, and what works well for one person may have a completely different effect on someone else.
