Art or salvation?

Egyptian artist Khaled El Sawy revealed the profound impact of art on his personal life, emphasizing that it was the main reason for rescuing him from several psychological and moral crises.

In an interview with media personality Anas Boukhach on the YouTube program “abtalks,” El Sawy stated, “Art saved me from madness, addiction, suicide, and atheism, and provided me with a light that helped me overcome the feeling of disconnection from the world.”

He added that discovering his passion for art granted him freedom of expression and creativity, serving as an alternative refuge from reality. He spent a long time envisioning himself in imaginary adventures until he realized that art would be his profession and future life.

Addiction to Substances

He continued, “There was a time in my life when I was addicted to substances, and it provided me with an escape from the real world, pulling me into a different realm where I immersed myself.”

Regarding the motivation behind his decision to quit drugs, El Sawy recounted an incident where he felt as if his heart was suddenly about to stop, leading him to believe he was dying. He said, “I went to bed and prayed to God not to let me die in shame, promising Him I would never return to that life. Indeed, less than five minutes after my prayer, I felt like I had slept for eight hours.”

Since then, Khaled El Sawy has rid himself of all prohibited substances, burned them, and started praying and exercising, commenting, “Those were the worst moments of my life; everything was ruined.”

El Sawy explained that this period was one of the most difficult times he faced, stating, “It was the hardest moment, and I had personal, familial, and professional issues that were not going well. The truth is, I was the primary reason for that. The most important thing is to face oneself and acknowledge one’s mistakes.”

 Self proclaimed “A Crazy Artist”

He described himself as a “crazy artist” who always tries to change his life and habits, adjusting to waking up early, attempting to save his life in some way.

On the professional front, El Sawy has signed on to participate in the fifth season of the series “Al-Medhah,” which is set to air during the upcoming Ramadan. He will play the role of “the devil,” a character previously portrayed by actor Fathi Abdewahab in the fourth season.
