Here’s what Naguib Sawiris said…

It all started when Sawiris questioned why “Arab” is included in “Arab Republic of Egypt.” His comment caught many by surprise, sparking a heated debate over national identity.

To clear things up, he later retweeted a follower’s post and doubled down on his stance:

“I’m Egyptian first, Arab second”

He explained that there’s no need to emphasize Egypt’s Arab identity—after all, we already speak the language! So why add extra labels?

The internet reacts – and it’s intense!

Predictably, Twitter exploded. Some users agreed wholeheartedly, arguing that Egyptians are their own unique people, with a history and culture distinct from the Arab world.

On the flip side, others saw no issue with the label, reminding everyone that Egyptians do speak Arabic and share ties with the Arab world.
