In her now-viral video, Fadwa Mawaheb stood in front of the Ramses II statue at the entrance of the Grand Egyptian Museum and quoted a Quranic verse:
This was widely interpreted as suggesting that Ramses II was the Pharaoh of Moses’ time—a theory that archaeologists and historians have largely dismissed. For many Egyptians, this wasn’t just an opinion; it was seen as a blatant distortion of their ancient history.
However, the backlash was quick. Social media exploded with criticism, with many calling it an “insult” to Egyptian civilization. Heated discussions flooded platforms, with people defending Ramses II as one of Egypt’s greatest rulers and rejecting any association with the Quranic Pharaoh.
As the controversy gained momentum, Fadwa Mawaheb stepped in to clear the air. She explained that she had been invited to a Suhour at the museum and had no intention of stirring up a historical debate or offending anyone.
This isn’t Fadwa Mawaheb’s first brush with public outrage. Just last year, she found herself in hot water for her “hot shorts controversy.”
She had posted a video advising young girls not to wear hot shorts at home in front of their mothers. She called it inappropriate and warning that it could lead to their “bad deeds” increasing. The internet didn’t take kindly to her remarks, labeling them as exaggerated and fear-inducing. The backlash was so intense that a complaint was even filed against her with the Public Prosecutor. This led to an investigation on charges of contempt of religion.
