After the World Health Organization declared the spread of monkeypox in Africa a global health emergency, the highest alert level it can issue, concerns have risen in Egypt about the presence of the disease in the country.
In response, Dr. Hossam Abdel Ghaffar, the spokesperson for the Egyptian Ministry of Health, outlined the ministry’s measures to monitor and manage any potential cases of monkeypox. He highlighted that the ministry has intensified emergency protocols and enhanced preventive health measures at all land, sea, and air entry points.
Dr. Abdel Ghaffar assured during a phone interview on a television program that no cases of monkeypox have been detected in Egypt so far, based on ongoing monitoring at various entry points.
He explained that the ministry’s actions were prompted by the World Health Organization’s designation of “M Pox” (formerly known as monkeypox) as a global health emergency.
The World Health Organization announced last Wednesday that the monkeypox outbreak in Africa has reached the status of a global health emergency, its highest alert level.
On Thursday, the WHO warned of the potential for discovering more imported cases of monkeypox in Europe soon, following Sweden’s report of its first case.
On Friday, WHO Director-General Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus issued further statements.
He stressed on his X (formerly Twitter) account that the detection of the first monkeypox case in Sweden highlights the need for affected countries to work collaboratively to combat the virus.
He urged all nations to strengthen surveillance, share data, improve understanding of disease transmission, share resources such as vaccines, and apply lessons learned from past health emergencies to address the current outbreak.
The disease has already resulted in at least 548 deaths in the Congo this year due to a more virulent and dangerous strain of the virus.
