In a move to strengthen her outreach efforts, Kamala Harris’s presidential campaign has enlisted Brenda Abdelaal, an Egyptian-American attorney, to help bridge the gap with Arab-American voters. Abdelaal, who previously worked at the Department of Homeland Security, is set to play a crucial role in connecting with this influential community as the election on November 5 approaches.
Abdelaal’s task won’t be easy. She will need to rally support from a community feeling disheartened by recent U.S. policies, particularly regarding the ongoing conflict in Gaza. Her appointment comes at a time when the campaign is keen on addressing diverse voter concerns and enhancing engagement.
Harris has also brought on board Nasreen Barakzai, an Afghan-American attorney, to focus on American Muslim communities. While the campaign has yet to officially comment on Abdelaal’s new role, her background and expertise in civil rights and national security make her a significant addition to the team.
Brenda Abdelaal has a strong background in law and public policy. She earned her bachelor’s and law degrees from the University of Michigan and has worked extensively in civil rights and national security. Abdelaal has also taught at institutions like New York University Abu Dhabi and Columbia University.
Her recent role was as Assistant Secretary for Partnership at the Department of Homeland Security, where she advised on external relations and the impact of departmental policies. Abdelaal has also been involved in anti-violence initiatives and held leadership positions with various civil rights organizations.
Before joining the Department of Homeland Security, Abdelaal led “Muslim Advocates,” a nonprofit that represents over 1,500 organizations in areas related to policy and civil rights.
Now based in Northern Virginia with her family, Abdelaal’s appointment signals a strategic push by Harris’s campaign to engage more effectively with diverse voter groups.
