Lotfi Labib: October 6th is a Victory, While October 7th is a Shameful Defeat

Manar Eissa

Egyptian actor Lotfi Labib sparked controversy at the Alexandria Film Festival with his strong opinions regarding the wars of October 6th and 7th. Labib referred to October 6th, 1973, the day of Egypt’s victory over Israel, as a moment of pride. However, he called October 7th, 2023, the day marking the start of Israel’s war with Palestine’s resistance, a “shameful defeat.” He also voiced his frustration over the ongoing situation in Gaza.

Labib’s statements have drawn mixed reactions. Some strongly disagree with his opinion of October 7th, arguing that it marks a turning point for Palestinians and will ultimately lead to their victory in the current genocide. Others, however, support Labib’s perspective, expressing their own frustration over the year of violence, including the heavy death toll, widespread destruction, and people’s displacement.

Meanwhile, Labib announced days ago that he was one of the soldiers who fought during the October 6th War. He also mentioned his work on the screenplay for “Al Kateeba 26,” a film based on the events of the war. Labib emphasized that the screenplay, completed in 1975, is based entirely on true events. The story details the Egyptian army’s successful crossing of the Suez Canal, beginning from the train ride from Limon Bridge in Ramses, Cairo, until the eventual peace negotiations.
