Magda Saleh is The first-ever Egyptian Prima Ballerina

Ballet had always been an integral aspect of Saleh’s existence, as she embarked on a journey deeply intertwined with this art form. Back in 1963, she stood out among her peers as one of the first five talented ballerinas to study at the esteemed Bolshoi Ballet company in soviet union. As time progressed, she joined the Cairo Ballet company and graced the stage numerous times at Egypt’s Khedivial Opera House, until it’s unfortunate destruction in 1971. Through these experiences, ballet shaped Saleh’s life, marking significant chapters of her artistic odyssey.

Following her remarkable journey, Saleh accomplished her Ph.D. in 1979 at New York University, focusing on the rich tapestry of Egyptian ethnic dance traditions. It was during her time at the university that she crossed paths with Jack Josephson, an Egyptologist, and their eventual union took place many years later. By 1983, Saleh assumed the esteemed positions of professor and dean at the Higher Institute of Ballet. Additionally, she played an instrumental role in the inauguration of the New Cairo Opera House, assuming the prestigious role of its founding director in 1987. Notably, Saleh possessed a master’s degree in modern dance from the University of California.

In recognition of her significant contributions to the arts

Saleh received a prestigious tribute from New York’s Theater in 2018 as part of their esteemed “From the Horse’s Mouth” series. However, following the unfortunate passing of her husband in 2022, she made the decision to return to her family in Egypt. Saleh held a pioneering role in the arts of Egypt, and her recent demise signifies the profound loss of a legendary cultural icon. Revered by numerous individuals, her profound impact will resonate not only within the Egyptian dance community but also on an international scale.
