The Egyptian public was recently stirred by an image showing a hand holding a 50 Egyptian pound banknote with a drawing of a pharaonic statue on it. Egyptians shared this image on social media, claiming that it was a new 50-pound banknote issued by the authorities.
Opinions about the design were divided, with some people supporting it and others opposing it. As the voices grew louder and the buzz increased, the Central Bank broke its silence. Local media sources reported that the Central Bank denied issuing any similar banknote.
So, what’s the truth? In light of these developments, an investigation was necessary, which led to information found via the Yandex search engine. It revealed that the image was actually part of a report published on the fact-checking platform “ده بجد” in 2018. The source of the image was traced back to a Facebook page, with a post dating back to December 13, 2016.
The page in question is named “Egyptian Currency Design Challenge,” and it encourages designers to submit their work. This revelation confirmed that all the claims about the image were not accurate
It’s worth noting that the misleading image had gained attention on various platforms until its true origin was uncovered.*
