On Sunday, President Abdel-Fattah El-Sisi stressed that Egypt’s significant international humanitarian relief coordination should not replace an immediate ceasefire. He made this point during a phone call with Ursula von der Leyen, the President of the European Commission, as they discussed the Israeli military escalation in Gaza.
El-Sisi emphasized that the international community has both a political and moral duty to take effective measures to protect Palestinian civilians and halt Israel’s collective punishment policy. Egypt firmly opposes any forced displacement of Palestinians from Gaza to Egypt, advocating instead for de-escalation and a political pathway towards a two-state solution, which is essential for a just and lasting peace in the region.
During the call, they also discussed ongoing efforts to provide more humanitarian aid to Gaza. The President of the European Commission expressed her gratitude for Egypt’s vital role in supporting the people of Gaza and assisting foreign nationals in leaving the region during these challenging times.
