On her first field visit as a Goodwill Ambassador for the United Nations World Food Programme, world tennis champion Ons Jabeur is visiting WFP projects in partnership with the Egyptian government in Luxor and Cairo.
These projects aim to address the impacts of climate change, improve educational opportunities, raise awareness about proper nutrition, and support women and youth empowerment.
At a time of unprecedented development needs, Ons’ visit highlights Egypt’s effective development models in education, rural development, and economic empowerment in the face of growing global challenges.
Ons said: “From combating hunger and food insecurity to addressing the impacts of climate change and supporting vulnerable communities like refugees, the work of the World Food Programme has become more important than ever.”
She added that “seeing how the WFP and the Egyptian government are addressing these issues locally has been incredibly inspiring; they are truly saving and transforming lives.”
She continued: “As a global Goodwill Ambassador for the WFP, I pledge to use my voice to raise awareness about global issues that require urgent and focused efforts, especially in these challenging times.”
During her visit to Luxor Governorate, Ons spoke with small-scale farmers who are supported by the World Food Programme in collaboration with the Ministry of Agriculture and Land Reclamation. The support includes providing clean energy, improved seeds that are more resilient to climate changes, and modern irrigation methods that reduce water waste.
She also observed how these projects are helping farmers adopt new agricultural techniques, which have resulted in a 40% increase in their agricultural productivity.
